Gum Disease Treatments
Gum disease treatments vary depending on the cause and type of the problem. For instance, if there is a deformity caused by trauma, surgical treatment is required. Mild issues caused by mistakes in oral hygiene can be addressed with medication, topical applications, or minor procedures.

The tissues surrounding the teeth are called gums. The field of periodontology deals with disorders that affect these tissues.

If inflammatory issues in the gums are not treated, they can lead to bleeding, bad breath, and many other problems. If the disease progresses, a person may lose one or more of their permanent teeth completely.

With regular and correct oral care routines, it is possible to reduce the risks of gum diseases. Additionally, it is important not to skip check-ups and to visit the dentist every six months.

What Are Gum Diseases?
The tissues that support the teeth and surround them are called gums. These tissues form the foundation of the mouth and teeth.

Healthy gums are pinkish-rose in color and hold tightly onto the teeth.

Bleeding gums, changes in color, itching, and increased sensitivity are signs of periodontal disease.

What Causes Gum Diseases?
Microbial dental plaques are a primary cause of gum disease. These plaques are formed by leftover food that has not been cleaned properly. Bacteria naturally present in saliva can also contribute to plaque buildup.

When bacteria accumulate in the gums, they form a layer. If not removed, this can begin to damage the gums.

Other possible causes of gum disease include:

  • Diabetes
  • Regular or excessive alcohol and tobacco use
  • Treatment with anticonvulsants, antidepressants, contraceptives
  • Use of heart or blood pressure medications
  • Leukemia
  • AIDS
  • Improper tooth brushing technique
  • Incorrect fillings
  • Mismatched crowns and bridges
  • Genetic predisposition
  • Tartar build-up
  • Teeth grinding (bruxism) during sleep
  • Vitamin or mineral deficiencies
  • Unhealthy diet
  • Obesity
  • Stress
  • Menopause, pregnancy, or puberty (Hormonal fluctuations during these times make the tissues more vulnerable to microorganisms, increasing the likelihood of disease development)

What Are the Symptoms of Gum Diseases?
The most important symptom is gum bleeding, which can occur on its own or during brushing.

Other symptoms include:

  • Sensitivity
  • Abscesses
  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Pain
  • Itching
  • Purplish-blue color changes
  • Bad taste and odor in the mouth
  • Changes in prosthesis fit
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Loose teeth
  • Changes in bite
  • Gum enlargement
  • Gum recession
  • Pus discharge
  • Gums moving away from teeth

How Are Gum Diseases Treated?
The answer to this question depends on the type of periodontal disease, its severity, and which surrounding tissues it affects.

Some of the most common treatments for gum diseases include:

Plaque Treatment:
To remove the plaques causing inflammation in the gums, a teeth cleaning procedure is needed. Ultrasonic devices are used for this purpose.

After this procedure, polishing (or "plaque removal") is done to smooth the tooth surfaces and remove existing stains.

Periodontitis Treatment:
In this disease, there is a space between the tooth and the gum. This periodontal pocket facilitates the progression of infection and the spread of the disorder. Bacteria begin to accumulate here, and in advanced stages, supporting tissues adjacent to the teeth are lost.

If detected early, surgery can be done to eliminate the gap and clean the inflamed tissues.

If the disease has progressed to a serious stage, the tooth may need to be extracted.

Gum Recession Treatment:
For this, a connective tissue grafting procedure is used. Sometimes, a free gingival graft may also be preferred.

Other Surgical Procedures:
In addition, the following procedures are also included in the treatments for gum diseases:

  • Subgingival curettage
  • Flap surgery
  • Crown lengthening
  • Gingivoplasty
  • Lip repositioning
  • Gingivectomy, etc.
